Do not use contractions. If the work is a scholarly work, do not use 1st person. Be wary of paragraph breaks and never use because, and, or words similar to start a sentence. Never plagiarize and always cite sources correctly. Run on sentences are dangerous and incorrect punctuation is a sin.
